Recorded during the course of a twenty-four hour period live in the studio with co-producers David Goodrich (guitars, piano), Stephan Crump (acoustic bass), and a lone overdub -- Goodrich's bottleneck guitar on "Old Pennsylvania" -- Laserbeams And Dreams "is what happens to twang when it steeps in Brooklyn gin joints instead of Austin honky-tonks," declared Jim Macnie in The Village Voice. "It becomes a bit darker and more gnarled, and though it likes the sun on its back, it can thrive in the shadows." Kyle Peterson in The Columbia (SC) Free-Times announced Friedman as "one of the greatest Americana acts around today."

Weary Things -- along with titles by Tom Waits, Chuck Prophet, and only a handful of others released that year -- was considered by the Associated Press among "The Best Overlooked Albums of 2009." NoDepression.com called the songs "unforgettable," while The New Yorker described Friedman's "hard-tack country originals" as "the mark of a true artist." Indie-icon Sufjan Stevens offered, "I think the world of Andy Friedman. I've always wanted to be Andy Friedman."

Friedman's debut studio album features guest appearances by Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst, Paul Curreri, Devon Sproule, Natalia Zukerman, and Melissa Ferrick. The title track appeared at #30 on a NY Post "207 Best Songs of 2007" list, which included songs by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Amy Winehouse, and The National. The album was recorded only 3 months after Friedman picked up the guitar for the first time in his life.
